TASS Webinar: Zero Emissions Day – Solar Energy in Schools in the UAE

What would you say to someone who offered to install solar panels on your school’s facility with no upfront investment, reduce your electricity bills, and provide a fantastic opportunity to educate for sustainability? If that’s not the definition of a no-brainer, we don’t know what is.

That’s exactly what’s on offer for schools in the UAE and other MENA countries from developers like Yellow Door Energy (YDE), as explained in our recent solar for schools webinar yesterday. 107 people from 35 schools in 13 countries signed up to the ‘TASS Solar in Schools in the UAE webinar’ to hear about the solar opportunity from Emirates Green Building Council, Yellow Door Energy, TASS and Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai.

In case you missed it – here’s a link to the recording and some key takeaways:

– The UAE is one of the best places in the world for solar energy – the MENA region gets 25% of all the solar energy in the world and solar in MENA costs one fifth of the world average. Despite this, it is home to only 5% of all the solar that is installed in the world – so there is a lot of opportunity to do more.

– Only 2% of the 1,600 schools in UAE have solar on campus. Those that do have solar it typically provides 25% – 70% of their electricity and reduces their carbon footprint by the same amount.

– Schools can install solar with ZERO capital cost using the leasing model developers like YDE offer.

– Rooftops aren’t the only place you can install solar – we saw examples of solar carports like the one at Swiss Scientific International School Dubai, schools like Dulwich College (Singapore) with solar on their walls, and heard about colored solar panels like the blue ones at the Copenhagen International School.

Join us for our next TASS webinar on Wednesday 9 October when we will be hearing from the School of Environmental Leadership in California about their approach to education for sustainability.
