Sustainability at
Sunmarke School

Sunmarke School is committed to sustainability, ensuring students develop the knowledge, skills, and values to positively impact the environment. As a member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS), we enhance sustainability efforts through education, student initiatives, and operational improvements.

Sustainability is embedded in our curriculum, encouraging students to explore environmental challenges. Our ‘Sunlight Fridays’ initiative promotes energy conservation by maximising the use of natural light in classrooms. This simple yet impactful practice reduces energy consumption while sparking discussions about sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Hydroponics is a key part of our sustainability efforts, allowing students to explore innovative, water-efficient food production methods. By growing plants without soil and using significantly less water than traditional agriculture, students gain hands-on experience in sustainable farming while learning about food security and climate resilience.

Beyond campus, students participate in local clean-ups, helping to protect natural environments and reduce waste. Educational trips provide real-world learning opportunities, deepening students’ understanding of sustainability. Visits to the mangroves in Umm Al Quwain highlight coastal ecosystem conservation, trips to Green Planet showcase biodiversity and rainforest preservation, and excursions to Masdar City offer insight into renewable energy and sustainable urban development.

Recycling is an essential part of our sustainability programme, with dedicated initiatives for plastic, cans, and paper. Our student-led Eco Team promotes waste reduction through school-wide recycling programmes and awareness campaigns. Competitions such as the Bottle Cap Challenge encourage active student participation in recycling efforts and environmental responsibility. Sunmarke has also achieved success in Junk Kouture, an international sustainable fashion competition where students design high-end fashion pieces entirely from recycled materials, showcasing creativity and environmental awareness.

Sunmarke integrates sustainability into daily operations by improving energy efficiency, reducing water consumption, and engaging the wider community in eco-friendly practices. Collaborating with TASS, we share best practices and continuously enhance our approach.

Through education, action, and innovation, Sunmarke School is preparing students to contribute to a more sustainable future.
