Sha Tin College is committed to empowering our students and staff to become conscientious global citizens. We strive to respect, protect, and enhance our environment on a local, national, and global scale by embedding sustainable practices into our daily operations, our curriculum, and our community ethos. Our goal is to minimise our environmental footprint, engage in meaningful action, and serve as a leading model for sustainable education within the ESF network and beyond.
Our campus is designed and maintained as a living, learning laboratory for sustainability:
- Green Spaces: We maximise the use of available spaces for planting and gardening.
- Resource Efficiency: We continuously strive to reduce energy consumption and invest in energy-saving technologies. Our usage is monitored via the Energy Sparks system to raise awareness and inform our reduction strategies.
- Waste Management: Comprehensive recycling facilities are widely available across the campus, and we are diligent in ensuring waste is properly separated.
- Reduction Initiatives: We actively work to reduce single-use plastic and paper consumption across all school functions.
- Sustainable Operations: The campus is cleaned using environmentally friendly detergents, and we prioritise sustainable procurement wherever possible.
Our commitment is brought to life through dynamic, whole-school initiatives that promote active participation:
- Recycling Competitions: Regular inter-school competitions challenge our community to improve recycling rates and reduce contamination, turning waste management into a fun and collaborative effort.
- Composting Programme: We operate composting systems to process organic waste from our school gardens and kitchens, turning it into nutrient-rich soil to close the loop on our food cycle.
- Food Waste Reduction: We are committed to reducing food waste through student education, portion control, and awareness campaigns in our cafeteria.
- Second-Hand Uniform Scheme: We run a successful collection and resale programme for second-hand uniforms each term, promoting a circular economy and making school wear more accessible and sustainable.
- Education for Sustainability: Sustainability is woven into tutor time through activities like quizzes, documentaries, and discussions, ensuring ongoing education and awareness.
- No Resource Week: A challenge for students and teachers to rely on digital resources and minimise the use of paper, printers, and photocopiers.
- Call to Earth Week: An annual week of action and awareness in partnership with CNN, dedicated to celebrating our planet and focusing on a specific environmental theme through workshops, activities, and assemblies.
The Sha Tin College Environmental Council (Encon) is our student-led environmental action group. Composed of passionate students from all year groups, Encon is the driving force behind many of our green initiatives. Members lead projects they are passionate about, developing leadership skills while making a tangible difference to our school’s environmental impact. Current and past Encon projects include:
- Managing and promoting the Second-Hand Uniform sale each term.
- Collaborating with the Cafeteria team to educate students on food waste reduction and monitor composting.
- Partnering with ESF and external consultants on audits to assess the school’s environmental impact (energy, waste, water) to guide future strategic actions.
- Working with Heads of Department to map and enhance sustainability content within the curriculum, ensuring it is deeply embedded across subjects.
