Sustainability at
Mubarak Bin Mohammed School

Mubarak Bin Mohammed School (MBM) is dedicated to sustainability across our school community. We focus on energy conservation and eco-friendly practices to minimize our environmental footprint. We have implemented various projects to reduce energy use, promote efficient resource management, and instill sustainability values in students and staff.

The key to our sustainability strategy is energy efficiency. To achieve this, we’ve installed energy-saving LED lighting throughout the campus, equipped with motion sensors, in almost all areas of school. These sensors automatically switch off lights when spaces are unoccupied, significantly lowering unnecessary power consumption. We also conduct regular energy audits to identify areas for improvement, which has helped us further reduce energy usage. In addition to lighting, our school has centralized air conditioning (HVAC) systems with newly installed programmable thermostats to optimize energy use. These automated systems adjust temperatures based on usage schedules, ensuring that classrooms and common areas are heated or cooled only when needed. This initiative has helped lower our carbon emissions and cut down on energy costs.

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond energy-saving initiatives. Recycling bins for paper and plastic are placed throughout the school and in every class monitored by a student recycling monitor. We encourage the use of reusable bottles and containers to reduce single- use plastic waste. We encourage students to use the e-waste recycle bins in the IT rooms. The school garden, though tended by the gardener, has students growing plants in good weather and incorporating their learning of science and sustainability.

Education plays a central role in our efforts, with students participating in environmental clubs and projects that promote sustainability awareness and encourage eco-friendly behaviors e.g. beach clean-up, schoolyard litter picking, field trips to Masdar – the sustainable city, and more. Looking forward, we aim to explore opportunities for increased student awareness sessions and further collaborate with parents for our sustainability activities.

Together, these efforts represent our school’s commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, fostering a culture of sustainability that inspires students, staff, and the community at large.
