Sustainability at
Luderitz Blue School

At the Lüderitz Blue School, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our goal is to create a learning environment that inspires responsible stewardship of our planet, with a particular focus on ocean literacy and preservation.

Situated between the desert and the sea, our school is uniquely placed to teach students how fragile and interconnected natural systems are. We recognise our responsibility to prepare young people to think critically about environmental challenges and to help them shape a more sustainable future.

Through our curriculum, which hosts unique subjects like Marine and Maritime Studies and the undertaking of all students of a Marine Science iGCSE, we are weaving sustainability into the everyday life of the school. Our students take part in hands-on coastal projects, from beach clean ups and sustainable gardening to recent marine monitoring activities alongside the BBC.

However, our context provides unique challenges. Namibia does not currently have the infrastructure for recycling, our isolated location makes sourcing uniform difficult, and uniform made from sustainable materials even more so.

In spite of this, we are working hard in the areas we can contribute to: the protection of marine life, the education of the future generation of climate and marine scientists, small scale recycling initiatives, building a new school greenhouse and, of course, joining TASS to learn more about how we can play our part in a sustainable future!
