Sustainability at
Kowloon Junior School

At Kowloon Junior School, sustainability is a key priority that shapes our educational environment and community values,  which is evident throughout our campus.

Our school is equipped with solar panels, harnessing renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprint and promote clean energy use. Complementing this, our rooftop garden serves as a living classroom where students can engage with nature while learning about sustainable practices. The green spaces scattered across our campus enhance biodiversity and provide students with areas to explore and connect with nature.

To monitor our energy consumption effectively, we utilise En-Trak sensors that provide real-time data, allowing us to make informed decisions about energy use and efficiency. This technology empowers students to understand the importance of conservation and encourages a proactive approach to energy management.

We take waste management seriously, which is why we have established a ground floor recycling station. Here, all recyclable waste is meticulously sorted and accounted for through our partnership with a local recycling company. This initiative not only minimises landfill waste but also serves as a practical learning opportunity for students about responsible consumption and waste reduction. Recently we have further reduced our landfill waste by adding electric food decomposer machines to all areas of the school. This is managed by our students and provides us with organic fertiliser for our gardens.

Our Primary Years Program (PYP) curriculum is designed to create meaningful connections to local and global issues, emphasising their impact on our world. Through intentionally planned units of inquiry, students engage with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and participate in child-appropriate actions aligned with the Good Life Goals. This integration of sustainability into our education fosters a sense of agency in our students, empowering them to make a positive difference in the world.

In addition to academic initiatives, we actively promote environmental initiatives that focus on reducing waste, saving energy, and enhancing biodiversity.  Our annual flower show celebrates the beauty of nature while raising awareness about the importance of plant life.

Student leadership plays a crucial role in our sustainability efforts. Class ambassadors for sustainability are tasked with implementing school-wide changes in waste management, energy use, and biodiversity enhancement. Our Green Dragons gardening and environmental club further encourages student involvement in hands-on learning experiences related to gardening and environmental stewardship.

We recognise that the success of our sustainability initiatives relies on the support of our wider school community. Collaboration with parents, local businesses, and community organisations is an essential element of fostering a culture of sustainability throughout our school.
