Sustainability at
Discovery College

Discovery College as a community lives by our motto, which is to Grow, Discover and Dream. These key values uphold our pledge to follow best sustainable practices within our local community and encourage our students to become changemakers. By way of our curriculum, we provide our students with the knowledge and the stage to address the issues surrounding our local environment and to be the change that makes a difference within our community.

The Green Cobras

Discovery College has their own sustainable environmental group, completely student run, known as the Green Cobras. The Green Cobras have made significant strides within the school, pushing for environmentally friendly daily student lifestyles. Recognising the power of positive community role models, the Green Cobras frequently engage with the younger years in educational presentations, activities, extracurriculars and more, in order to build sustainability as a core concept into their lives. The Green Cobras also engage frequently with school wide changes, being advocates for reduction of plastics, recycling of school material, and the future development for the staircase we have built to make each step progressive, and environmental. Green Cobras are passionate to continue to make meaningful contributions to our school, all in the name of the environment!

Waste Management

Discovery College has implemented recycling and waste reduction programmes such as perpetuating reuse, reduce and recycle principles. Sustainability is inherent within our school’s structure and is regarded in every aspect, whether regarding food production or learning material. Disposed food is sent to O Park, where the food is converted into renewable energy to maximise sustainability and produce. We try to use paper as little as possible by resorting to electronic programmes such as Kognity etc, which helps promote a sustainable regime throughout the school’s main facilities. Drives are held throughout the year for various goods such as the redistribution of books, clothing and canned food. Sports uniforms are partially made of sustainable materials.

TASS’s Five Focus Areas

  • Discovery College’s sports uniforms are constructed partially with sustainable materials, and are working on further improving the school uniforms to make them more comfortable, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
  • We also utilise a school bus system for students of all years to prioritise student convenience and carbon footprints.
  • Chartwells, our food caterer provides healthy options for our students, and is also inclusive to dietary restrictions by providing vegetarian and nut-free options.
  • DC TASS has been actively working towards improving the school’s menu, by improving the taste as well as the sustainability and nutrition of our canteen meals.
  • The infrastructure of the school is an open area, allowing for less use of energy as the transparent roof provides natural light, and the open corridors allow for less use of lights.
  • Sustainability-focused lessons were integrated into various subject areas, allowing students to explore renewable energy, waste management, and environmental conservation through hands-on projects and guest speaker presentations.
  • Informative posters and signage were displayed throughout the school to raise awareness about recycling guidelines and tips for reducing energy and water usage.
  • Student-created artwork and infographics about sustainability themes were also showcased, inspiring the broader school community to get involved.

Joining TASS will enable students in Discovery College to become a bigger part of a sustainable future. This partnership will ensure that all of our students are innovators and agents of change. Through this collaboration, students will have opportunities to learn more about sustainability and create programme-based changes to introduce sustainability as an inherent part of education for all ages. The TASS partnership is key to developing new projects, ideas and taking action to create a more sustainable school, such as school lunches, bus programs and uniforms. Through this partnership, Discovery College students will also have the opportunity to work with innovators of change from all over the world.
