Sustainability at
Dubai British School Emirates Hills

At Dubai British School Emirates Hills (DBSEH), sustainability lies at the heart of our culture, curriculum and campus operations. As proud members of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS), we are committed to equipping our students with the knowledge, creativity and leadership skills needed to build a more sustainable future.
Our student-led Eco Committee takes the lead in driving school-wide initiatives, from beach clean-ups and recycling campaigns to sustainability events and interschool collaborations. These efforts are supported by a whole-school approach to learning, where sustainability is embedded across all subjects. Whether through science investigations, art projects using repurposed materials, geography lessons on climate change, or persuasive writing tasks focused on environmental issues, our students explore real-world challenges from multiple perspectives.
Through hands-on experiences and cross-curricular links—including within our STEAM projects—students design hydroponic farms, build wind turbines, and prototype sustainable products, developing critical thinking, creativity and a deep sense of environmental responsibility.
Sustainability also drives our operations. We have installed solar panels to reduce our carbon footprint, monitor energy and water use, and track indoor air quality. Our advanced Building Management System (BMS) ensures efficient regulation of lighting, air conditioning and ventilation across the school, significantly reducing unnecessary energy consumption. Waste is carefully sorted on site, with clearly labelled recycling bins in every classroom. We have active plastic collection points and a growing focus on food waste recycling to further reduce our environmental impact. Our partnership with Leela’s Lunches ensures eco-friendly, compostable food packaging, and DBSEH is now proudly a plastic-free campus.
Our operational commitments also extend to sustainable transport solutions, with the introduction of biofuel-powered school buses helping to minimise emissions and contribute to cleaner air in our community.
Beyond the classroom, we collaborate with environmental organisations such as DGrade and The Waste Lab, engaging our students in community outreach, upcycling challenges and national sustainability events. At DBSEH, we believe sustainability is not a subject—it’s a mindset. Our students are learning to lead with purpose, ready to make a lasting difference to the world they will inherit.
