A Sustainable Future with ASHK
Sustainability is a fundamental value at American School Hong Kong as a cross-curricular academic focus, and in project-based learning, from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
Amongst the all-encompassing scope of the UNSDGs, the sustainability categories of the Environment, Society and Governance feature at ASHK.
From the academic curriculum to clothing to catering to energy consumption and transportation, ASHK has taken an ambitious approach to addressing multiple aspects of sustainability.
Our initiatives include:
- Investigating Carbon Neutral buildings, sharing the findings globally and initiating a carbon audit of the campus
- Implementing student leadership intent on energy-saving practices across the campus
- Recycling, repurposing and reusing classroom materials as a student-led project collaborating with local businesses to foster greater local connections (via The Green Club)
- Collecting (literally) tonnes of old clothing to be repurposed or recycled with the environmental NGO Redress
- Introducing sustainably-innovative new uniform items with Uniform Station, our school uniform provider
- Supporting student awareness of each student’s Carbon Footprint and systems to mitigate this impact
- Growing vegetables onsite and developing a food compost system
- Promoting Meatless Mondays with Chartwells, our food service provider
- Encouraging shuttle bus and school bus ridership with Kar Ying Transport, our bus service provider
- Creating platforms to incorporate environmental education into all disciplines and classrooms throughout the school
On joining TASS, the Student Ambassadors, Ryan Leung (Grade 10) and Amy Zou (Grade 9) have shared their passion for change with classmates via presentations, surveys and initiatives. Currently, they are investigating how best to address food waste, limit energy consumption, and raise awareness on each individual’s carbon impact.
