Al Ain British Academy

Sustainability at
Al Ain British Academy

Located in Al Ain, just two hours from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain British Academy serves 1,100 students aged 3 to 18. As you explore our campus, you’ll notice examples of our commitment to sustainability everywhere.

  • Eco-Councils: Our Primary and Secondary Eco-Councils meet weekly to discuss sustainability initiatives and put their ideas into action.
  • Sustainable Canteen: Carefully planned menu with the environmental footprint in mind. Water in biodegradable bottles whilst utilizing eco-friendly packaging and utensils.
  • Recycling Initiatives: Segregated bins throughout the common areas of the school to promote paper recycling and waste reduction.
  • Operational Measures: Our Operations Team has implemented strategies to reduce water consumption, minimize electricity waste, promote recycling and active monitoring of waste production, track and monitor air pollution and air quality within our school.

Our efforts to promote sustainability extend beyond the school week. For example, Sustainable Sundays take place on the last Sunday of each month, where our sustainability coordinators and volunteers from the sustainability club host a 90-minute workshop at the Zayed Central Library (public library), welcoming younger students and families from Al Ain to learn about environmental concerns.

Throughout the year, we engage students in UAE and ALDAR sustainability events that raise awareness on Sustainable Development Goals. Our highlights include:

  • Participating in a creative writing competition focused on the SDGs with ‘Voices of Future Generation’, Middle East
  • Participating in the ‘World’s Largest Sustainability Lesson’
  • ‘Upcycling Challenge’ inter-school competition
  • Mini COP28 style student conference in Al Ain

Recently, we introduced our Eco Council to the education team at the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Center (SZDLC). During our visit, students took part in a workshop on “carbon footprint,” raising awareness of how our daily choices influence our overall carbon impact.

We are delighted to be a member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools. TASS helps us to empower our eco-council members to become proactive change-makers, and help inspire community engagement across our school and beyond, to drive impactful change for a sustainable future.
