Sustainability at
Aiglon College

As a community-owned school, Aiglon College is dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment and society. We are committed to a sustainable future seeking to engage our community to foster innovative solutions.

At Aiglon, sustainability is not just a goal—it is a commitment we integrate into our daily lives.

Our school is nestled at 1,200 metres in the Swiss Alps, where nature is not just our backdrop but an integral part of our daily life. Here, we embrace a holistic approach to education, nurturing the development of mind, body and spirit through principles of challenge, respect, responsibility, diversity, and service. This ethos extends beyond us to include the environment and communities of which we are privileged to be a part.

Aiglon champions student-driven sustainability initiatives. With a strong emphasis on sustainability as a way of life, Aiglon students have made significant strides, through student learning to launch sustainable businesses. Their efforts are supporting our community of changemakers to take action for a healthy future. Through the Student Sustainability Group and initiatives like our Thrift Store project, students lead the charge in promoting recycling and reducing waste on campus. We have been awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag, recognising our dedication to sustainable development.

Our commitment is integrated into five categories: infrastructure, resources, mobility, wellbeing and student action. Some of our achievements include:

  • In 2019, we committed to a 10% decrease of our energy consumption by 2029 as part of an energy efficiency programme.
  • Solar panels have been installed on the Tony Jashanmal Sports Centre and other roofs around campus to produce electricity and offset the school’s dependence on fossil fuels.
  • District heating systems (chauffage à distance) have been developed across a number of school properties. This contributes to creating eco-friendly infrastructure and management of resources.
  • Located on a mountain, our open campus encourages walking as the primary mode of transport between classrooms, boarding houses, and the village, promoting a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle.
  • To facilitate the transition to electric vehicles, we provide convenient charging points for our staff and visitors, further supporting sustainable transportation choices.
  • Our school restaurant prioritises local vegetables and meat, with ninety percent of our ingredients sourced from within Switzerland. By choosing local produce, we support our regional economy and reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation.
  • Through effective waste separation and recycling practices, we aim to minimise our ecological footprint and foster a cleaner environment. Ongoing initiatives to recycle on campus and reduce food waste contribute to these goals.
  • We have conducted a carbon audit with local partner, Henovia, to further assess and reduce the school’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainability in Education

As a learning institution, sustainability is integrated not only into Aiglon’s operations, but also its pedagogy. From junior to senior school, our academic and co-curricular programmes emphasise the importance of respecting our environment. Given our location – students see the real-life impact of sustainable practices both inside and outside the classroom. From geography to science, as well as expeditions to activities, students and teachers engage in discussions on sustainability challenges and actively participate in community projects.
