Metanoia and Sustainable School Campuses
About Metanoia
Metanoia is the leading sustainability consultancy for schools in Asia and the Middle East. We are technical specialists with a focus on the carbon footprint of schools as well as the many other environmental impacts of schools’ operations and best practice in education for sustainability.
What We Do
Our student-centered Whole-School Sustainability Audit covers 12 topics (modules) – Energy, Water, Travel (including carbon emissions from commuting and school trips), Procurement and Waste (including audits of general waste and recycling), Food and Food Waste (including a food waste audit and emissions estimate), Building and Grounds (including a biodiversity audit), Curriculum, Community Engagement, Governance and Decision-making, Communications, and Envisioning the Future We Want. Together, these areas encompass the 5Cs of a sustainable school – Campus, Curriculum, Community, Culture and Communication.
Each module involves detailed data-gathering and analysis, calculation of the associated greenhouse gas emissions (where relevant), developing an understanding of the main factors that contribute to those emissions, and formulating practical recommendations for reducing the emissions or making other improvements. Throughout this process, there are various experiential learning opportunities for students to engage with the audit in a manner that complements or extends their formal curriculum.
Each section of our final report is structured in three parts – context, audit findings and recommendations. The context section provides relevant background on sustainability in the place where the school is located and is a unique educational resource.
Envisioning the Future We Want is a culminating event in which students present the findings of the audit to the school community and take part in a facilitated exercise to help them articulate a clear vision of the transformed sustainable school of the future based on the audit insights.
For schools that are not yet ready for the full Whole-School Sustainability Audit, we offer individual or grouped modules – depending on each school’s specific needs.
