Metanoia and Education for Sustainability
About Us
Metanoia is the leading sustainability consultancy for schools in Asia and the Middle East. We are technical specialists with a focus on the environmental footprint of schools and best practice in education for sustainability.
What We Do
We offer a variety of project-based sustainability courses for schools, including Carbon Literacy for Schools, our Carbon Offsetting Lab, and our School Food System Inquiry. All our courses draw on our 10 years of experience working with schools and students in sustainability and education for sustainability. If your school is looking for something different, we can curate bespoke Education for Sustainability courses based on your specific needs.
Our accredited Carbon Literacy for Schools course covers the essentials of climate change. Students will develop a clear understanding of the science, the consequences and socioeconomic impacts of continued global warming, and the practical actions available to students and schools to reduce emissions and drive positive change. Students will develop two carbon-reducing pledges: one to reduce their own carbon footprint and one to reduce their school’s carbon footprint. These pledges will be submitted for assessment by The Carbon Literacy Project, and students who meet the criteria will be awarded a personalised Certificate of Carbon Literacy.
The Carbon Offsetting Lab provides a structured introduction to how offsetting works and the role of high-quality carbon credits within a school’s climate strategy. Students learn how to critically evaluate carbon offset projects, identify permanence and other risks, spot greenwashing, and assess co-benefits. They also learn how to estimate their school’s travel emissions using accepted industry methodologies. The capstone project involves students developing clear, evidence-based recommendations for their school leaders based on their analysis of real projects with transparent criteria.
The School Food System Inquiry takes students on a deep dive of the environmental impacts of the food system and what schools can do about it. This guided inquiry offers students the opportunity to step into real-world roles: researchers who map the food system at their school and identify leverage points for sustainable change, auditors who plan and conduct a food waste audit and a carbon audit of school food, analysts who crunch quantitative and qualitative data, communicators who bring the data to life and use it drive behaviour change, and project managers who oversee all of the above. The inquiry culminates with students developing practical, evidence-based behaviour-change interventions supported by their own data.
