TASS White Paper: Responsible School Uniform Disposal in Hong Kong

School uniforms are a source of textile waste which is a major environmental problem. Most of the 1,000 schools in Hong Kong require students to wear a uniform, which typically consist of at least six items, and most families own at least two sets.

According to Metanoia, students in Hong Kong are estimated to purchase more than 2.5 million uniform items every year. Most of these have a relatively short life because students grow out of them very quickly, or wear them out. Sometimes, the entire uniform is made obsolete because the school decides to change the design or its branding. This can give rise to tens of thousands of waste clothing items all at once ⚠

How can schools divert their uniforms from the landfill and dispose of them responsibly? This white paper outlines a few disposal options available to schools in Hong Kong, whilst taking various challenges and considerations into account. Read it here: Responsible Uniform Disposal in Hong Kong
