ICHK-Hong Lok Yuen Signs The Sustainable Schools Charter

We are pleased to welcome International College Hong Kong – Hong Lok Yuen (ICHK-HLY) as a Founding Member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools.

Pictured here is the Head of School, Mr. Derek Pinchbeck, signing the Sustainable Schools Charter in the presence of primary students in their ‘Forest Classroom’ – one of the many outdoor spaces at the school that help foster students’ love of nature.

ICHK-HLY is an IB primary school located in the countryside of the New Territories. It was founded in 1983. Today, it is one of only a small number of Forest Schools in Hong Kong and the first school outside the UK to achieve Forest School Development Center accreditation. The school believes that you cannot embed sustainable living into students’ lives without first embedding a love and knowledge of our natural world.

The campus includes an outdoor classroom, called The Woods, and several different outdoor adventure playgrounds. The school partnered with Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden to create workshops that explore sustainability, animals, biodiversity, and trees and plants. And in partnership with Nature Maker Labs, the students planted – and are now nurturing – a Miyawaki forest on the school grounds with over 300 native trees and shrubs.
